Home   About   Carl Wilkens

wilkensThe Fellowship is named in honor of Carl Wilkens, a self-described “ordinary” man and the only American who chose to remain in Rwanda during the 1994 genocide and is credited with saving hundreds of lives. Mr. Wilkens is emblematic of the program’s theme: ordinary individuals can make an extraordinary difference when they choose to engage.

Carl Wilkens is a world renown speaker and Director of World Outside My Shoes which seeks to inspire and equip people to stand up against genocide, racism, and intolerance. His book, I’m Not Leaving, describes his experience in Rwanda during the genocide and his efforts to work his way through roadblocks of angry, bloodstained soldiers and civilians armed with machetes and assault rifles in order to bring food, water and medicine to groups of orphans trapped around the city.
