Since 2009, the Carl Wilkens Fellowship has been a selective, part-time program that aims to provide a diverse cohort of working professionals with various levels of experience, tools and resources to build unique programs and sustained political will to end mass atrocities. The changing context of human rights advocacy has catalyzed our advisory board to revisit the Fellowship’s mission and objectives.

Evolving from a single focus on genocide and mass atrocity advocacy, we are re-envisioning the Fellowship as a three-pronged approach focusing on human rights advocacy, civic education, and grassroots dialogue. Our goal is to move upstream by tactically addressing the entire spectrum of mass atrocities and identity-based violence, from dangerous speech to mass atrocities and genocide. The Carl Wilkens Fellowship is poised for dramatic growth in both structure and scope of impact. We are searching for an experienced and passionate leader who feels inspired by our mission and is ready to help shape and steer the Fellowship toward a sustained movement for human rights and dignity through advocacy, education, and dialogue.

This position is dependent on grant funding and would start in September 2017. Location: New York or Washington, D.C.-based or willing to travel frequently.

The Carl Wilkens Fellowship is a currently a program of iACT, a Los Angeles-based international organization providing humanitarian action to aid, empower, and extend hope to those affected by mass atrocities. Under the leadership of the new Executive Director, the Carl Wilkens Fellowship will become it’s own 501(c)3 by December 2018.

The Carl Wilkens Fellowship’s first Executive Director will:

  • Manage a network of 70+ Fellows working around the world and start a new class of Fellows
  • Drive the expansion and scope of the Fellowship to include:
  • Advocacy: Engage in high-level human rights and atrocities-prevention advocacy by focusing on root causes and structural changes.
  • Education: Partner with teachers and other educators to engage in education about citizenship and global and domestic human rights.
  • Dialogue: Support a network of Fellows (the most dedicated activists who want additional training and resources) to act as domestic peace-builders.
  • In partnership with the advisory board, create a long-range strategy for the Fellowship
  • Move the Fellowship from a Fiscal Sponsorship arrangement to a 501(c)3
  • Travel 20-30% of the time (it may actually be more than that) to meet with Fellows in their communities and with partners
  • Oversee and support the creation of a comprehensive development plan, leading to a broad and diversified funding mix

Experience: Required

  • 5+ years of management or leadership experience that demonstrates the ability to set and achieve strategic objectives, manage a budget, and grow a nonprofit.
  • Enthusiasm for building a global legal network to protect and promote human rights.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage diverse support relationships, and collaborate effectively with Fellows, funders, partners, and activists.
  • Must be able to work independently while managing several ongoing partnerships, campaigns, and events nationally.
  • Experience managing a network of volunteers virtually.
  • Experience working in the conflict prevention, mitigation, human rights, dangerous/hate speech sector.
  • Experience in top-level advocacy with a track record of success, with building relationships on the Hill, and grassroots advocacy and campaign building.
  • Experience writing grants and conducting creative fundraising campaigns for the Fellowship.

Experience: Preferred

  • Experience working/living abroad in a conflict/post-conflict setting, preferably in one of the areas or countries who have experienced or who are currently experiencing a mass atrocity situation.
  • Social media savvy and communications experience, including taking complex issues and explaining them to a diverse audience.
  • Website savvy with wordpress or similar engine.

Work Environment:

Job-related activities can be performed outside of iACT’s main office in Hermosa Beach, CA with primary focus being staff driven. iACT offers flexible in-office and at-home working hours. A significant amount of work is required to be done remotely as Fellows are located across the United States. There are some duties that indirectly and directly relate to promoting the organization and the Fellowship program. Professional attire must be worn when representing iACT and the Fellowship program. Travel is required to fulfill responsibilities. Error in judgment can have a dramatic effect on the organization.
